Owning a Virtual Private Server (VPS) is beneficial whether you are a web developer, hacker, or simply need hosting solutions. This blog will discuss what a VPS is, the advantages of owning one, and provide recommendations for VPS platforms.

What is a VPS?

A virtual private server, also known as a VPS, acts as an isolated, virtual environment on a physical server, which is owned and operated by a cloud or web hosting provider. VPS hosting uses virtualization technology to split a single physical machine into multiple private server environments that share the resources. Google Cloud

Simply, it is a PC that is hosted somewhere, and you can access it by its public IP address.

Why should you consider owning one?

Cost-Effective

In my experience, VPS has saved me a lot of money. As a web developer, you create a lot of websites, especially non-profitable ones like personal projects or portfolio sites. To make these websites accessible online, you need a hosting solution. Many platforms offer free hosting, but that is typically limited to front-end websites. For back-end needs, such as storage space and database connections, it's almost impossible to find a platform that offers these services for free. With a VPS, you can host as many websites as you want.

Customizable Hardware

Most the VPS providers allows to customize your server hardware based on your needs. As your website or application grows, so do your resource needs. VPS hosting allows for seamless scalability, enabling you to upgrade your CPU, RAM, and storage as needed without any downtime.

Security

VPS hosting offers a higher level of security than shared hosting. Each VPS is isolated from others on the same physical server, minimizing the risk of security breaches. Additionally, you can set up your own VPN on a VPS, allowing you to hide your identity online for hacking ;)

VPS Platforms

I have tried 3 platforms:

1. Vlutr

This is the platform I am currently using. It supports custom ISO installations and has excellent customer support. When I tried to cancel my account, they were extremely helpful, and now I'm back with them again :)

2. Cloudzy

I used this platform for one month, but then they stopped supporting Kali Linux, which led me to switch.

3. Digital Ocean

They offer a two-month trial, which is great for your first VPS to explore its functionalities. However, I had a bad experience with them "I got banned :)"

Also, Hostinger is a great platform for hosting services. However, it does not support custom ISO installations.

Conclusion

Choosing the right VPS platform depends on your specific requirements and preferences. Evaluate your options carefully and select a provider that aligns with your goals. Whether you're hosting personal projects, running a business website, or experimenting with new technologies, a VPS can provide the performance and control you need to to achieve your goals.
